Quick and Easy Energy Saving Tips
Following the previous simple energy saving techniques of installing Loft Installation and Energy Saving Light Bulbs, below are a few more simple things that can be done to improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions and save money on utility bills easily.
We all feel draughts, especially in the windy winter nights, and these aren’t pleasant to us, or the environment. Draughts are a major way that homes lose their heat and as a result increase energy usage, bills and carbon emissions, so stopping these is a good and simple energy saving technique. One cheap and easy way is to cover gaps around doors with brushes or sealants that can be bought from most DIY and home stores. Another simple energy saving technique is to cover up keyholes and letterboxes. Gaps in floorboard are another source of those uncomfortable draughts we feel; these can be filled with sealant, beading or rugs that can brighten up the appearance of a room as well as save energy and reduce carbon emissions. If you have curtains or blinds, closing these at dusk and keeping these closed overnight will keep heat in and reduce your energy bills as well as lower your carbon emissions which will help the environment.
Another rather strange sounding but useful simple energy saving technique is to stick aluminium foil or reflective panels behind radiators. Funny sounding as this is, it reflects heat back into a room rather than letting it escape through external walls which would otherwise lose you money on utility bills and contribute more to climate change.
One final quick and easy technique is to turn down your thermostat. Turning down your thermostat down just 1°C can save up to 10% on an annual heating bill, approximately £65 a year. You can also set your boiler to come on only when hot water and heating is needed. Your boiler could also be set too hot, unnecessarily wasting energy. Your cylinder should be set at 60°C/140°F, any higher and you are unnecessarily wasting energy.
